A Bulk Buy rating at the great Costco price, we review the excellent Casa Vinicola D'Angelo Aglianico Del Vulture.
100% Agllianico from 30-35 year-old vines in Barile in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. The wine is aged for 18 months in large barrels.
We love wines made from Aglianico because of their powerful character and tannic nature, thanks in part to the thick grape skins of this late-ripening variety.
Unfortunately we don't see it nearly as much as we would like to, so when this one popped up at our local Costco, we were all over it. It also helps that this was a Wine Spectator Top 100 wine of 2022, coming in number 49 on their list. Let's check it out!
The D'Angelo Aglianico Del Vulture has an average price of $21 but we found it at Costco for just $14.99. It is imported by Tri-Vin Imports.
From the bottle:
Aglianico is an ancient varietal of grape grown in the rich volcanic soils of Basilicata. The wine is riche, velvety smooth, with ripe fruit characteristics.
13.5% Alcohol
The 2019 D'Angelo Aglianico Del Vulture opens with a fantastic aroma of dark fruit with lovely deep, baking spice and herbal notes. It's a very well integrated and harmonious bouquet that even has a bit of a graphite or iron-like mineral note to it.
The wine features similar flavors to the nose and tastes dry, tannic and quite chewy just the way I like it! This is a great example of the variety.
It ends dry, dusty, savory and very long and was just as good on day 2. Stock up on this one Italian wine lovers!
Cheers
